As long as we work with active substance users a sound working knowledge of BBV will remain a basic requirement for all client facing staff.

This one day training is designed to provide this knowledge, so that staff can manage BBV risk, for themselves and the workplace.

Staff will more alert to BBV risk factors for clients and better able to offer advice and support to reduce risk and harm.



The learning objectives for this training are:


  • Understand the key BBV’s (blood borne viruses)
  • Understand the key BBV’s including the survival outside the body factors
  • Understand the key transmission routes for BBV’s
  • Understand the transmission routes associated with HIV, HVC, HBV.
  • Understand the relevant precautions associated with BBV’s
  • Understand the relevant precautions that service users need to be aware of
  • Understand the relevant precautions that those working in drug treatment services need to be aware of
  • Understand the key preventative measures associated with BBV,s
  • Understand the key preventative measures service users need to be aware of
  • Understand the key preventative measures that those working in drug treatment services need to be aware of
  • Understand the available treatments, immunisations and testing procedures relevant to BBV’s
  • Understand any available treatments for HIV, HCV, HBV. Including immunisation or lack of immunization
  • Understand the testing procedures for HIV, HCV including “window periods”
